6 Best Rugs for your Home
With tiles, laminate and wood floors having become so popular the market for rugs or carpets has increased. Not only do they make a room warmer in the cooler months and provide a comfy spot to sit but they can create a focal point of interest.
However, as with any interior design element, there are a few things to consider when purchasing a new rug. Essentially it comes down to style, placement and budget. It is also worth considering other facts such as how easy is it to clean, how long you intend to keep it, and whether you have a preference in terms of material used. Do you want a rug made from natural material or synthethic?
Wool Rugs
Wool is a natural fibre rug that’s traditionally handwoven, hand-tufted, hand-knotted, or hand-loomed. True wool rugs are generally more expensive due to the extensive work that goes into designing and building them, but the quality is excellent, and they are extremely hardwearing and robust – often lasting for generations. Given its robustness, this type of rug is ideal for high-traffic areas, like lounges, passages and bedrooms.
Silk Rugs
The inclusion of silk in a rug creates a luxurious shine. Silk rugs are also thin and soft to touch. Despite their obvious beauty, they are fragile, difficult to clean and so really only good for low-traffic areas. If you want the look of silk, you can go for something made with rayon and viscose – but these are not too durable.
Cotton Rugs
Cotton is an inexpensive and playful rug material that is budget friendly. Unfortunately cotton rugs tend to fade and stain easily. They are however great for casual areas and a great option if you like to change your décor often.
Jute and Bamboo Rugs
Jute and bamboo are natural rug materials which add a beach house feel to an area. They add texture and atmosphere and are economical. Despite being made from natural material you do need to check that they can withstand the elements if you decide to use them in an outside area.
Leather and Hide Rugs
These rugs are made from specific animal hides. They work really well in smaller spaces and can add interest to a room. One of the downsides of hides is that they can shed and curl at the edges. They also tend to accumulate dirt, so you do need to clean and shake them out.
Faux Fur and Faux Hide Rugs
Faux fur rugs are generally made from of acrylic and synthetic blends. These are ideal for those who want the luxury of fur but are not comfortable with the real thing.
Polypropylene Rugs
Many modern rugs are made from synthetic materials, like polypropylene, nylon, polyester, or viscose. They do tend to be thinner than a wool rug, but some can still feel just as soft. Aside from being economical, they are quite easy to maintain and clean and are fade resistant, so they really work well in any high traffic area from offices and classrooms to kids’ rooms and even outdoors. Biggest negative is that they do not decompose well and so are not the most environmentally friendly option.
Microfibre and Polyester Rugs
Microfibre rugs are made from either 100% polyester or a blend of polyester and other synthetic fibers. They use tiny strands of thread to create a plush feel are often machine-woven but can mimic the look of more expensive wool rugs. If you are environmentally conscious then these are a great option as synthetic rug material is PET, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. They are also inexpensive so are a great design choice if you want to brighten a room.
