Choosing the best upholstery material for a headboard is important. An upholstered headboard not only adds an element of style, softness and comfort to the bed but also enhances the overall look of the bedroom. Upholstered headboards can be made from many different types of fabrics:
Natural fabrics: The most common natural fabrics that are used for an upholstered headboard include materials such as cotton and linen. Both linen and cotton have a tight weave that can last for years and are easily available in a variety of colours and patterns. They are soft to touch making them a comfortable choice.
Synthetic fabrics: There are a variety of synthetic fabrics which are used for upholstered headboards, polyester and chenille (a blend of cotton, rayon and polyester fibres) are probably the most popular. These fabrics are more durable and stronger than natural fabrics and are generally fade and stain resistant.
Velvet: Velvet gives a luxurious finish and can really add to the overall look of the bedroom. It has an incredibly soft texture, which feels amazingly comfortable and cosy as a back support. The tick weave makes it an exceptionally durable material.
Leather: Leather-upholstered headboards are sophisticated and classy. Good-quality leather is strong, durable and longer lasting than fabric upholstery. It is also easy to maintain as stains can easily be cleaned with a damp cloth. Also, unlike fabric, leather does not absorb smells and odours and does not stain. It is, however, a more expensive option.
Leatherette: Leatherette or vinyl is a synthetic material that is made with PVC or polyurethane to simulate the look of real leather. It is known to be resistant to fading from exposure to UV rays, and it is waterproof and non-porous, which makes it easy to maintain. It is more cost effective than leather but does not wear as well and can crack and reveal the fabric base layer.
