spice up your decor with red

How to spice up your decor with red

Red instantly draws attention to itself more than any other colour. Whether it’s used to put a room on high alert with a bright shade of scarlet or to envelop visitors with a cosy, warm glow, red is a favourite colour. Red is full of drama and passion, it’s not a colour for the faint of heart, but when thoughtfully used, whether on a wall or in a handful of accessories, it can make a room come alive.

High-octane orange-tinted tones make you feel energized and alive, while subtler, old-fashioned purplish shades―burgundy, maroon, brick can evoke a cosy feeling

Tip #1

Try red as an accent of the room by pulling it in through your draperies or furniture.

Tip #2

As punctuation in a room of neutrals, red is an instant-makeover colour that is capable of enlivening large areas with little effort. As a general rule, it is usually better to pick one shade of red and stick with it, competing tones can feel chaotic and overwhelming.

Tip #3

Even one red piece of red furniture can transform a bland room. Red furnishings work well with pale and dark neutrals, white walls, wood floors, natural stone, or as a rich matte counterpoint to metallics.

Tip #4

Avoid having your space overrun and dominated by red by just sprinkling red pieces here and there for pops of colour rather than having it all over the place.

Tip #5

Less is usually more when it comes to decorating with red. You can choose just one large red statement piece for your room (a rug, a painting, a couch, etc.)
and use complementary colours to draw the eye to that piece or use selectively placed red pieces around the room (curtains, lamps, cushions, etc.)
