The real cost of upholster
Reupholstering furniture is a good option especially if the actual frame and hardware of the piece is still in good condition.
Skill and Experience
It takes skill and experience to ensure fabric is cut correctly so that the finished product looks its best.
Even if you choose a plain fabric with no pattern, all fabric has a ‘grain’ much the same as wood and this needs to be taken into consideration when cutting. Furthermore, the weave of the fabric affects how the fabric stretches and moves. If cut incorrectly the fabric may not perform correctly which may shorten its lifespan.
If you are using a patterned fabric, it will take more fabric depending on the pattern repeat. Features such as skirts and deep buttons will also increase the amount of fabric used as well.
Remember that extra costs will be incurred if the frame requires repairs or if cushions need to be replaced.
Reupholstering is a labour-intensive exercise, which takes time if it is to be done properly. It is also a skill that takes many years to master.
